Carving News

Terry is really excited about a carving class he'll be going to in August.  He'll be gone 10 days for an intensive class where he'll be carving an owl.  He's hoping to improve his carving and painting skills, to unlearn bad habits and form new ones.  The instructor is a world class carver so he'll be coming home all pumped up to start carving I'm sure.  It's a major sacrifice for him to go in August as that's his favorite time of year for fishing Silvers.  We recently won a Travel Voucher from Hyundai and plan on using it to travel to the Ward World Carving Championship in Baltimore Maryland Spring of 2014. He will be able to take classes and attend seminars, I hope to explore historical sights in the area.  I'll post pictures of all the fun stuff and new carvings I'm sure he's going to be inspired to create.

Loon - 2013

It's been almost a year since posting on the blog, for a variety of reasons, but that doesn't mean Terry hasn't been busy carving.  He's been commissioned to carve this Loon as a birthday gift.  It's his first Loon so he's put a lot of time into, because as usual he wants to get it just right. He got the idea for the habitat from a carving magazine, it represents rippling water, I think it will really set it off once the Loon is painted.  I will post pictures of the finished project.

Puffin - Christmas 2012

Terry was commissioned to carve the Puffin as a Christmas Present for a guy's wife.  She loves Puffins we're told.  I didn't get the chance to take its "formal" portrait; Terry quickly snapped pictures of it before he headed north to deliver it.  This is his 4th Puffin and each one gets more better :)

Spring Chick-a-dee

Terry is having a grand time carving Chick-a-dees. Mainly because this is his last hitch to carve before summer. They're something he can start and finish this time of year. When he comes home in three weeks there will be yard work to do, something he is already lamenting about. :) This little guy flew to a good home which brought tears to the eyes of its new owner. Terry so enjoys it when people like his work. This will probably be the last post until next winter. Hope everyone has a good summer!!

2012 Wood Duck

Terry was commissioned to carve this Wood Duck after last years Artistry in Wood. He finished it the day before it was due to enter this year. He tried a new carving technique on it after attending a seminar at the Columbia Flyaway in Vancover Washington last fall. He always fusses over what is wrong with his carvings, yet he did quite well taking a Blue Ribbon in catagory and a Green for Best in Division. The Wood Duck has gone to a good home in Wasilla, Alaska. He also received a Blue Ribbon for the Chick-a-dees posted below. Their new home is at his Mom's in Big Lake, Alaska. He'll be carving away next time home as it's his last hitch to carve before break-up and Summer when he can play in his new boat.

Chickadee Pair

It's carving season for Terry. This is his first hitch off since last spring that he can devote his time to carving. To get him back in the groove he decided to carve Chickadee's. I personally think they are rather cute and real looking. He plans on giving this pair to his mom after he enters them in the Artistry in Wood competition during Fur Rondy in February. The single chickadee has already flown away to its new home. He's currently working on a Wood Duck and when it's completed I will post pic's of it. Hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I do.
